For this project I decided to work with a very beautiful Island Batik collection from last fall (2019) named Jewel Box and designed for Linda and Carl Sullivan of Colourwerx by Kathy Engle.

Every time that I think about thread painting the inspiration always guides me to flowers, animals and nature. So I was already working with floral compositions ideas for a possible quilting class panel next year and I decided to "borrow" one of my panels for this challenge!

For this "collage style" panel I decided to bond the back side of all the batiks with Mistyfuse before cutting all the flower and leaves design. It was really fun to play with the different layouts! When I was happy with the result I started to press all the design elements to the background fabric, I used a 26" square of Island Batik Foundations in Doughnut.

My quilt sandwich "recipe" for this project is top batting layer with Hobbs 100% Tuscany Wool Batting and bottom layer of Hobbs Heirloom Premium 80/20 Cotton/Poly blend batting. Exactly, 2 layers of batting will give the perfect texture and dimension to the quilting!

For the quilting I decided to use different designs and colors to sketch and thread painting. Here is the color list of threads all in 50wt: 2535, 2545, 2810, 2884, 5023 and the variegated 4060.

One of my favorite details about this quilt is how you can alternate the light perception on the background by using variegated thread.

I also love to play with the quilting and the fabric design!
